The income-tax department during its tax evasion survey found out that in three prime health care facilities in the city the source of funding of the residential and commercial buildings which they had set up was dubious. The management couldn’t explain the funding even for the buildings from where they were operating. Investigations are on and the I-T department has found that the tax evasion ran into over Rs 4-5 crore.

While the major tax evasion was by Dhawan hospital, that even carries out cancer surgeries besides offering care to ailments renal ailments from its Sector 7 multi-storey building, the other two medical facilities,Dr Poonam Gupta’s nursing home in

Sector 16 and Bakshi laboratories also evaded tax by

understating their income in

I-T receipts.

Officials said Gupta nursing home and Bakshi laboratories evaded a collective Rs 2.25 crore. Initial investigation made out through the tally of documents of Dhawan hospital put the evasion at Rs 2.5 crore. Officials added that the evasion by Dhawan hospital could turn out to be much higher after assessment of unaccounted documents. The evasion by Gupta nursing home is to the tune of Rs 1 crore, while that of the Bakshi laboratories is Rs 1.25 crore.

These health care facilities not only understated the sources of their income but even didn’t disclose the source of their funding for the buildings which they have raised. Officials said Dhawan hospital did not disclose the funding behind their multi-storey building from where the hospital operates in Sector 7. Funding source of the residential-cum-labortary facility of Bakshi laboratories in Sector 10 has also not been revealed to the department.

Officials added that these residential and office facilities set up by health care centers were being run with money raised through illegal means. They said that during searches they seized some incriminating documents related to tax evasion. The seizure includes property details of the healthcare facilities and unaccounted receipt books. Officials said that the receipts that were earlier shown by these healthcare facilities didn’t match with the on the record earnings. This helped the I-T officials detect the evasion.
