21-year-old dies after pistol ‘accidentally’ goes off

Police sources said that Gill was in his SUV, when his friend went to the wine shop, and when he returned, Gill was reportedly injured with a bullet wound. Two other friends of Gill, in another car then also reached the spot.

His friends immediately shifted him to Government Hospital, Sector 16, Chandigarh. However, doctors declared him brought dead.

Following information about the incident, police launched an investigation.

The deceased’s friends, who were accompanying him, have been detained and were being questioned.

SHO (Police Station Sector 17) and DSP (Central) SPS Sondhi reached the spot after being informed about the incident.

The police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the firing.

Sources said the pistol in Gill’s possession was a licensed weapon. However, police officials said they were verifying whether the firearm was licensed and were also examining other aspects of the incident.

DSP Central SPS Sondhi said, “Prima facie it appears to be an accidental firing. The victim was a student of LLB third year. The investigation is under progress.”
