The preliminary postmortem report of a 14-year-old domestic help Pushpa, who was found hanging in the bathroom of her employer’s house in Sector 20 on Tuesday, has ruled out the possibility of rape. The viscera of the minor would, however,be sent to Madhuban on Thursday to ascertain the exact cause of death.

The police, meanwhile, have registered a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code against Pushpa’s employer,Vikas Seth. Two persons have also been reportedly detained by the police for creating a ruckus outside the housing society of the Seths.

“The postmortem of the victim was conducted today and the report is expected tomorrow. Though prima facie,a case has been registered against Vikas Seth,it will be only after the postmortem report that the exact cause of the death will be known,” said Panchkula Superintendent of Police Amitabh Dhillon. He added that heavy police force has been deputed around the housing society,GH 30,as a preventive measure.

According to sources, the body of the victim bore no strangulation marks.

Family made to wait for hours to claim body

The family of the victim alleged that despite reaching the General Hospital early morning, the police failed to get the postmortem conducted in time. Sunita, the mother of the victim, said: “We reached the hospital around 9 am but despite sitting for more than four hours, the police kept delaying the postmortem procedure.” She said the body was handed over to them after hours of wait.

The Seth family

Putting their view point forth,Ritu Seth, the wife of Vikas Seth, who has been accused of Pushpa’s murder, said: “Our baby was born only 15 days ago and thus I was always at home. My parents-in-law have also come down from Kanpur to help us. Vikas, who works with a private firm in Chandigarh, was on his way to Delhi but returned from Kurukshetra after we informed him that Pushpa had committed suicide.”

She added that Pushpa last told her in-laws that she was going to the toilet. “Half an hour later when she did not come out,we went to look for her and found her hanging in the bathroom,” Ritu said, adding they rushed her to a local private hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Society residents on the edge

With large police presence in and around GH 30 and the clash last night,a number of office-goers preferred to stay indoors on Wednesday. A resident, requesting anonymity, said had the police remained a mute spectator while a mob went on a rampage on Tuesday night, pelting the housing society with stones and damaging several cars. Some residents demanded increased security till the time the probe was on in the case.
