A 14-year-old domestic help was found dead at the residence of her employer in Sector 20 of Panchkula late on Tuesday evening. Alleging that Pushpa had been raped and murdered, her family members and relatives, along with hundreds of sympathisers, staged a protest outside the housing society. They pelted stones at the house and damaged several cars parked there. The police resorted to a mild canecharge to bring the situation under control. Some of the police vehicles were also damaged during the protest that continued for around two hours.
While Pushpas employer Vishal Seth was stated to be out of town, his family claimed that she had committed suicide by hanging herself from the window grill in the bathroom.
Pushpas father Dikpal Kumar pulls a rickshaw to earn a living while her mother Sunita works as a domestic help. The chowkidar of the society (GH 30) called me in the evening to inform about the death of my sister. We reached there and saw my sisters body with injuries on her face and neck and blood all over her clothes. It seemed her tongue had been cut by a knife, said Reshma, the elder sister of the victim. She added that her sister was being harassed by the Seth family. Pushpa had been staying at the house for the last six months. When I met her around 2 pm today, she told me that she was beaten up every day. She was,in fact, planning to leave the job from May 1, added Reshma.
In their statement to the police, the Seth family claimed that Pushpa went to the bathroom around 4 pm and they saw her body hanging from the widow grill around 5 pm. According to the Seths,Pushpa allegedly used a dupatta to commit suicide. Seths wife and parents were present when the incident occurred. The family later claimed that Vishal, who works with a private company, had left for Delhi around 4 pm. The police said the family rushed Pushpa to a hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. A postmortem will be conducted at the General Hospital in Sector 6 on Wednesday.
