Ten persons, including two women and a child, died while 24 others were injured when a private bus skidded off the road and rolled down the hill into a deep gorge near Koti, nearly 26 km from Chamba, this morning.

The ill-fated bus (HP 39,2425) belonging to a private operator,Thakur Bus Service, was on its way to Chamba from Bhrara in Tissa. Driver Madal Lal is among the injured.

Of the roughly one dozen seriously injured passengers, police said, one has been referred to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) Hospital and the others to Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College,Tanda. The other injured have been admitted to a local hospital.

Deputy Commissioner Devesh Kumar told The Indian Express over phone that he had ordered a magisterial inquiry into the accident as apparently the road at the accident site was perfectly fine, and wide for safe mobility of the vehicles.

“Some eyewitnesses have told the police that the driver ,who is among the injured persons, had overtaken an HRTC bus just a few minutes before the accident and perhaps tried to speed the vehicle,” the DC revealed. “In the process he (driver) is understood to have lost control and the bus rolled down nearly 50 feet into the gorge.”

Rescue parties and medical teams rushed to the spot and faced difficulty in removing passengers from the crushed vehicle. They used gas cutters to rescue some of the passengers .

Only a few weeks back,43 people, including 32 members of a marriage party, were killed in two separate accidents in Chamba. Five persons had died in another accident in the same district last week.
