Odisha’s revenue and disaster management minister Pramila Mallik is set to be the Speaker of the state Legislative Assembly — the first woman to hold the post in the state.

Six -time BJD MLA Mallik, who represents the Binjharpur constituency, a seat reserved for Schedule Caste (SC) candidates, will file papers for the Speaker’s post on behalf of BJD Thursday.

Given the BJD’s strength in the House, Mallik’s election is a foregone conclusion, though her tenure will be less than one year.

The Speaker’s post has been lying vacant since May 12, when Bikram Keshari Arukha resigned from the post as he was included in the Naveen Patnaik’s Cabinet.
