‘Why can’t we lead a normal life?’: Athlete Dutee Chand on Supreme Court verdict on same-sex marriage

Olympian Dutee Chand said that it should be the freedom of every individual to be with and marry whoever he/she wants, adding that she was hopeful that the Centre would bring a law on same-sex marriage.

Olympian Dutee Chand, among the few athletes in the world to openly admit to a same-sex relationship, said that despite the Supreme Court unanimously ruling against same-sex marriage on Tuesday, it supported them “indirectly”.

“We are not forcing anyone to be in a relationship with us. We do it by our choice. I think we should also be allowed to lead a life as per our choice. Why can’t we (those in non-heterosexual relationships) lead a normal life? Several countries have granted recognition to same-sex marriage, what is the problem to legalise it in India?” Chand told The Indian Express in view of the apex court order.
