The Wadi police station on Wednesday booked 48 people in Vadodara in three FIRs following a Tuesday night clash between two groups in Panigate area of the city. While two cross-FIRs were lodged in connection to the clash, it also triggered a riot in the vicinity, for which 40 people were booked in a separate FIR.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 11 pm when Abdul Arqan Mansuri (20), a second-year BCom student at MS University, was returning to his house at Khangah Mohalla in Panigate-Wadi. He allegedly ran into Ravi Kahar (35), a daily wage labourer, in Ranavas area of Panigate. Mansuri and Kahar, who have filed cross complaints against each other and were also injured in the clash, allegedly got into an argument over Mansuri riding his bike.
While Mansuri in his complaint alleged that Kahar and three other accused refused to give him way, Kahar claimed that Mansuri was rashly riding his motorcycle with two pillion riders. Following this, supporters of Kahar and members of Mansuri’s community clashed. The mob allegedly pelted stones and attacked each other.
The Wadi police station has registered two FIRs. In one of the FIRs, Kahar is a complainant and Mansuri, along with Akmal Khan Malek, Faheem Mansuri and Kabir Mansuri, has been named as accused. In the second FIR, Mansuri is the complainant, and Kahar, along with Ashish Rana, Yogesh Kahar and Naran Kahar, has been named as accused.
While Kahar alleged that the accused attacked him with a knife and inflicted injuries while threatening to kill him, Mansuri also alleged that the accused attacked him with weapons and threatened to kill him.
The accused in both the FIRs have been booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 294(b) (uttering obscene words), 506(2) (criminal intimidation) and 114 (crime committed in presence of abettor) of the Indian Penal Code.
Inspector R D Makwana of Wadi police station said, “Two FIRs have been lodged following complaints by two injured persons, who are currently in hospital and are also accused in each other’s complaints…”.
“It was a quarrel over giving way to a two-wheeler between two or three people that later triggered a riot about 50 m away. We have lodged a third FIR for the rioting against 40 people, who are being identified. No arrests have been made so far,” he added.
The third FIR, Makwana said, has been lodged by personnel of the Wadi police station after supporters of Kahar and members of Mansuri’s community clashed since the two sustained injuries during their brawl. The police had to disperse the crowd.
Makwana said, “Police personnel have been deployed in the area. The riot was contained immediately as soon as we received the message. We are investigating the two complaints as well as the riot. Once both the complainants have received treatments, we will arrest them too…”.
The 40 people booked for rioting are not accused in the first two FIRs filed by Kahar and Mansuri, he added.
