The Bengaluru police on Tuesday said they arrested two men for allegedly abducting and sexually assaulting a 37-year-old woman waiting for a bus in the K R Market area on Sunday night.

The police said the incident took place around 11.30 pm near Godown Street. The woman, a native of Tamil Nadu, had left home a few days ago after a fight with her husband, said the police. The woman asked the accused about the availability of the bus to Yelahanka. They allegedly told her the bus stop was elsewhere and took her to Godown Street, pretending to help her. Later, they allegedly sexually assaulted her and robbed her mobile phone, jewellery, and cash.

The police did not reveal the accused’s names but said they are labourers working in K R Market. Commissioner B Dayananda said a probe was underway, and the woman had been shifted to a shelter home.

Reacting to the criticism over the incident, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Belagavi said, “No rape took place during BJP tenure in Karnataka? rape incidents should not take place in the first place. Women should get protection. But few anti-social elements indulge in such activities. We will take stern action against them.”

He was reacting to the BJP state president B Y Vijayendra Yediyurappa’s comments about the Congress government’s alleged failure to maintain law and order. On X, he said, “Karnataka, once known for its culture, tradition, and safety, is not getting a bad reputation as a haven for robbers and rapists. The report of the gangrape and robbery of a lone woman waiting for a bus near K R Market in the capital, Bengaluru, is a very despicable and inhumane incident and the law and order situation in the state has reached a point where it is unable to protect the women.”

“The Congress government is currently doing factional politics and Congress festivals but citizens are facing an atmosphere of insecurity in this government system that has forgotten the public interest and social security. Is there a police system in this state? Is there a home department? Is a government ruling this state? The common people are asking the question,” he added.
