According to the police, the tragedy occurred at around 12.45 pm at the Esteem Mall junction. The junction has been frequently flagged by locals as posing a serious threat to the lives of pedestrians since vehicles often ignore the red light at the point. The junction was earlier selected to be part of a pilot project on pedestrian safety initiated by the city traffic police but was later abandoned.

One of the victims Arpitha (20), the daughter of a former Karnataka legislator, was using the pedestrian zebra crossing while the other victim, Anand Kumar (25), employed in a private company, was riding pillion on a motorcycle that had halted at the signal light when the water tanker ploughed into them and three others.

Arpitha and the three others who were injured were rushed to a nearby private hospital but Arpitha died enroute, the police said.

A senior police officer in Bangalore said that the Bruhath Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as well as the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) had been asked to build a skywalk for pedestrians at the heavy traffic junction but nothing had materialized.
