The ‘site-dedication ceremony’ for the US consulate in Bengaluru will be held on January 17. Officials said the location of the upcoming consulate will be announced during the ceremony.
A highly placed source said either the Central Business District or Whitefield would be chosen for the site of the US consulate. Although visa issuance may first start temporarily from the JW Marriott hotel, where the office of the United States Commercial Service (USCS) is currently housed.
There was a long-standing demand to have a US consulate in Bengaluru. After the establishment of the consulate, residents of Bengaluru and Karnataka will not have to go to other states to process their US visa applications.
It can be recalled that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had said during his visit to Bengaluru in January last year that he would urge the US Ambassador to India to set up a consulate in the city soon. Earlier, during PM Modi’s visit to the US in June 2023, it was announced that the US would open two new consulates in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, while India would establish a mission in Seattle.
US Ambassador Eric Garcetti had also announced that the US Consulate in Bengaluru would start functioning in January 2025. At present, the US has its Embassy in New Delhi and operates consulates in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
