The 26-year-old son of a Congress leader in Karnataka has been arrested over a hit-and-run incident in Udupi that resulted in a motorcycle rider’s death in the early hours of November 13, police said.

Prajwal Shetty allegedly rammed his Thar into a motorcycle ridden by Mohammed Hussain, a 39-year-old resident of Belapu village, around 5 am, when the victim was going to work. Shetty, who was returning home after dropping off a friend, fled from the scene with his vehicle.

A grievously injured Hussain was found at the accident spot on the Punchalakadu-Belapu road by locals who shifted him to a local hospital and later to KMC Manipal, where he succumbed to injuries on November 14.

The Shirva police checked CCTV footage from the region and found the vehicle to be a Thar belonging to Shetty, son of Belapu grama panchayat president Deviprasad Shetty.

The investigation following Shetty’s arrest and the seizure of the Thar revealed that the vehicle was being driven at a high speed on the extreme right side of a narrow road while the motorcycle was coming in the opposite direction.

“The accused fled the spot assuming that nobody had witnessed the accident, but the vehicle was traced on the basis of CCTV footage and the suspect was identified the next day after the accident,” a police officer said.

“After knocking down my son and injuring him, the driver of the vehicle did not stop to check on him or inform a nearby police station about the incident but drove away, leading to his death,” Hussain’s father Umarabba, a labourer, said in his police complaint.
