With the temperature rising, water scarcity seems to have hit the Karnataka capital as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board has asked the public to use Cauvery water only for drinking and cooking.
A few areas in Bengaluru East complained about inadequate water supply and are now dependent on water tankers that charge exorbitantly. The board said in a statement that every day 1,450 million litres of Cauvery drinking water is supplied to Bengaluru. It urged the residents not to use Cauvery potable water in toilets and gardens and for cleaning vehicles. Tube well water and treated water from wastewater plants should be used for such purposes.
“There is a possibility of a shortage of drinking water. Water supply will be done to the water shortage areas in the city with the help of 68 lorry tankers under the authority of the board. Besides, about 10,710 public tube wells are being maintained by the board, and water is being supplied in excess,” said the statement.
Board officials have been appointed to monitor water supply to 35 subdivisions and extensive inspections are being carried out in the subdivisions, it added.
A board official said that usually during summer, there will be an additional demand of 5 per cent of water and it is hard to accommodate if the water is not saved. The 110 newly added villages are yet to get water connections and areas like Marthahalli, Sarjapura, KR Puram and Varthur are being served by water tankers.
Shree Kumar, a flat owner in KR Puram, said his apartment was dependent on water tankers but that they demanded high prices citing an increase in fuel expenses.
A service provider told indianexpress.com that a water tanker with a 5,000 litre capacity would charge Rs 700 plus additional fuel costs.
The city on Thursday reported 33 degrees Celsius, which is likely to increase in the days to come.
