The Mysuru police have launched an investigation after sarod maestro Rajeev Taranath allegedly received an anonymous phone call demanding commission to perform at the annual Dasara festival in the city.
According to Taranath, 91, an unknown person called him over the phone and demanded a cut from the honorarium to be paid to him for his performance scheduled for October 21.
Soon after the issue came to light, Mysuru zilla panchayat CEO K M Gayathri, who is also the deputy special officer for the Dasara sub-committee on culture that organises Dasara cultural programmes at the Mysuru Palace, visited Taranath’s residence and took information from him.
Karnataka minister H C Mahadevappa, in charge of the Mysuru district, ordered a probe and a government official M D Sudarshan filed a complaint.
The Jayalakshmipuram police registered a case under sections 384 (extortion), 420 (cheating) and 511 (attempt to steal) of the Indian Penal Code. They are yet to track the accused.
Taranath, a Padma Shri awardee, told the media that he would perform if he gets a deserved honorarium, and it is the duty of a musician to perform. “I will perform only if the government comes back to me with a positive response, or else I will move on,” he said.
However, he denied allegations that some organising committee members had asked him for the commission. In a video message, he said, “No officer or anyone from the sub-committee or anyone else had approached me in this regard, and I have not given such a statement to anyone.”
