In the wake of sexual abuse allegations against Janata Dal (Secular) leader and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, a network of organisations at Naaveddu Nilladiddare in Karnataka will hold a ‘Hassan Chalo’ rally on May 30 in support of the victims.
As many as 10,000 people, including women, farmers, students, gender minorities, writers, intellectuals, artists, and retired government officers, are expected to participate in a public protest against Revanna. The JD(S) leader, who is suspected to be in Europe, is set to surrender before a special investigation team (SIT) investigating the case on May 31.
According to the organisers, the purpose of the rally is to embolden thousands of women victims of Revanna’s alleged sexual violence to openly and unitedly uphold their dignity. The group condemned the ‘misuse of political power, constitutional responsibility and caste privilege’ by Revanna and demanded his immediate arrest.
In a press statement, the group said, “The women who have been subjected to all forms of sexual harassment by Prajwal Revanna and his father HD Revanna and who have come forward to file complaints should be helped to protect their privacy. They should be protected immediately. We demand that they be provided with personal counselling, legal advice, appropriate protection, rehabilitation and relief.”
The group demanded the arrest, prosecution, and punishment of those who publicly shared the victim’s identities through pen drives and social media. They also requested the appointment of special technical officers by the Cyber Police Department to remove inappropriate videos and photos from the internet.
The protesters will also submit a comprehensive petition to the state government demanding that Revanna and all the other accused should be held accountable for their actions and put to trial. In addition to expressing their support for the ongoing protest march in Hassan, representatives of the ‘If We Don’t Stop’ platform have appealed to the women and citizens of Hassan to come forward to speak against the injustice meted out to them.
