Police recover 17 kg of gold whisked away by businessman’s driver in Bengaluru

Police arrested five persons in a joint operation to track down a man who stole his employer’s car containing 18 kg of gold worth Rs 4.3 crore.

The pursuit to nab the man was jointly carried out by the police in Bengaluru city and in the Kolar district in Karnataka.

According to the police, the driver of a car owned by a gold businessman Rajesh Bhat hatched a plot along with four associates to drive off with his employer’s gold in the course of transportation of the gold.

On June 6, the businessman was in the process of bringing by road 18 kg of gold he had purchased in Kolkata. The car driver identified as Babu drove away the car containing the gold when the businessman and his friends halted at a highway hotel near Kolar, 60 km for Bangalore, for a meal. Bhat immediately informed the Kolar police and lodged a complaint alleging that his driver had driven away with his car containing 18 kg of gold. The Kolar police who had launched a man hunt for the driver along with the Bangalore police have coordinated with two friends of the driver.

Based on information provided by the two friends the police rushed to the Chikamagalur district of Karnataka where the gold was reported to have been stashed away. The police picked up Arun, Amjad and Mansoor, from the Nallur village near Chikkamagalur and have recovered 17 kg of gold. The main accused the driver Babu remains at large.

The five arrested persons have been identified as Kumar,Vishwanath, Arun, Amjad and Mansoor – all close friends of the driver who drove away with gold businessman Rajesh Bhat’s car. “We have arrested five persons in the case. The main accused Babu is still at large. Efforts are on to nab him,” a police officer said.
