The Mysuru police denied permission to the BJP to hold a protest against the incident of stone pelting at the Udayagiri police station earlier this month, and clamped prohibitory orders in the city ahead of planned demonstrations by various organisations.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has approached a court after being denied permission to hold the protest against the incident at the police station. BJP Karnataka president B Y Vijayendra, Leader of Opposition R Ashoka, and other senior leaders are expected to participate in the rally, according to a party office bearer.
Seema Latkar, Commissioner, Mysuru police, announced the restrictions on meetings, rallies, and protests linked to the February 10 violence at the Udayagiri police station. In her order, Latkar said any such events related to the police station incident could disrupt public peace, communal harmony, and law and order.
The police said they have imposed the restrictions to prevent potential clashes and maintain stability in the city.
The decision follows the Rashtra Suraksha Janandolana Samiti Mysuru’s call for a ‘Mysuru Chalo’ rally from JSS Vidyapeeth Gunhouse to Kote Anjaneyaswamy Temple, condemning the incident.
The Dalit Mahasabha and Mysuru District Youth Congress Committee have planned a counter-event, alleging that the BJP is trying to depict the Muslim community negatively over the Udayagiri violence.
On February 11, a mob attacked the Udayagiri police station, demanding that a social media user picked up over a provocative post on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s loss in the recently held Delhi Assembly election be handed over to it.
The police said they were forced to resort to a lathi charge after some people pelted stones at the Udayagiri police station. They also arrested several people involved in the stone-pelting.
