As Mysuru is gearing up for the 10-day Dasara festival, the city police have given permission to hold Mahisha Dasara atop Chamundi Hills with conditions such as that it be renamed Mahisha Utsava and that no idol procession, any other rally, sloganeering or bursting of firecrackers will be allowed.
Commissioner of Police Ramesh Banoth has allowed the organisers to conduct the event between 10 am and 12 pm on Friday. He said the police would check people at all the entrances to Chamundi Hills. The police have also imposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in and around the place in Karnataka’s heritage capital.
Former mayor Purushotham, who belongs to the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, had sought permission to shower petals on the Mahishasura statue atop Chamundi Hills, followed by a procession.
BJP’s Krishnaraja MLA T S Srivathsa, who had sought permission to hold a protest against the Mahisha Dasara celebration, has not been allowed to go ahead with his plan.
A decades-old controversy erupted again when the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti decided to take out a rally on Friday to celebrate Mahisha Dasara, in the name of Mahisha, who it believes was not a demon but a king who spread Buddhism in the region.
The row took a political turn when the local BJP unit announced that it would counter the rally with a Chamundi Betta Chalo march on the same day.
