A group of youths, many reportedly affiliated to Bajrang Dal, allegedly stripped and attacked a Muslim youth in public in Mangalore on Monday evening.
The victim — identified as Shakir, an employee of Easyday Supermarket — was reportedly targeted as he was with a Hindu girl, his colleague. Shakir claimed he was merely giving the girl a ride in his car on her request, when he was attacked.
However, addressing a press meet Tuesday, the girl alleged that Shakir, her manager at work, had been harassing her. “On August 24, when I was in the office, he sent me a message offering to drop me. I accepted his offer since I was under stress. When I left the office, he was waiting in his car outside. He held my hand and forced me inside. I shouted for help and people who were around came to help me,’’ she claimed.
The girl said she did not know that Shakir had been stripped, tied to a pole and beaten by a group of right wing activists.
Mangalore police have arrested 13 youths for the attack. “Some of the arrested men belong to the Bajrang Dal. We are probing if the incident was motivated by Bajrang Dal,’’ said Police Commissioner S Murugan.
“The people who rescued me seem to have been arrested. I do not know who they are and if they belong to any group,” said the girl.
Based on her complaint, a molestation case under Section 354 of the IPC was filed against Shakir at the Pandeshwara women’s police station in Mangalore on Tuesday evening.
