The Bengaluru police have arrested a 30-year-old man working in the merchant navy on charges of sexually assaulting a woman after promising to marry her and forcing her to undergo abortions.

The police arrested Bilal Rafeeq, a mechanic in the merchant navy hailing from Kozhikode in Kerala, after a nurse from Uttarakhand who works at a Bengaluru hospital lodged a police complaint against him.

According to the FIR, the woman met Rafeeq on Instagram in 2021. The two soon became close, exchanging regular phone calls and developing a relationship. The woman claims that despite her objections, they engaged in sexual activity, resulting in two pregnancies in 2022 and 2023. She alleges that Rafeeq coerced her into terminating both pregnancies.

The woman further alleged that during her stay in a paying guest facility from February to April 2024, Rafeeq repeatedly forced her into sexual intercourse, leading to a third pregnancy.

In August, her parents provided cash and valuables to Rafeeq following an agreement between the two families to proceed with their marriage.

However, in September, Rafeeq’s parents allegedly insulted the woman over her caste, withdrew from the marriage plan, and threatened her.

Rafeeq has been booked under the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
