A man with a criminal record and the main accused in the Mohammed Fazil murder case that took place in Karnataka’s Surathkal in 2022 was murdered in Mangaluru on Thursday evening.

The police identified the deceased as Suhas Shetty.

The incident occurred near the Bajpe bus stand. According to eyewitnesses, a group of assailants, armed with blunt objects, surrounded Shetty and inflicted fatal injuries upon him before fleeing the scene. Locals immediately alerted the police, who transported Shetty to a nearby hospital, where he died.

Shetty, a resident of Bajpe, is alleged to have orchestrated Fazil’s murder three years ago. Fazil, 23, was hacked to death by a gang of four masked men on July 28, 2022, at the Bee Jay’s clothing store in Surathkal. The murder occurred amid tensions in Dakshina Kannada over the killing of BJP youth leader Praveen Nettaru, 32, in Bellare village.

Shetty, who was with the Bajrang Dal, was arrested and released on bail.

The police are investigating whether Shetty’s murder is a retaliatory act linked to his earlier cases. The police have also increased security in Bajpe and surrounding areas to prevent further incidents.

The incident follows the recent brutal mob lynching case where a mob in Mangaluru’s Kudupu lynched a daily-wage labourer on April 27.
