An employee working with a business processing outsourcing (BPO) firm in Bengaluru allegedly stole the personal data of a woman colleague and used them to take a personal loan of Rs 2 lakh in her name from a bank.
The police have launched a search for the accused, Lokeshwar Sugumaran, who was entrusted with safeguarding the mobile phones that employees deposit before entering the workspace. His role afforded him access to mobile phones of all employees, stored securely in lockers under his supervision, said the police.

In 2022, during working hours, he allegedly observed the pattern to unlock the complainant woman’s phone and illicitly accessed her Aadhaar and PAN details.
With the stolen data, Sugumaran allegedly applied for a personal loan in her name without her consent. The bank did not conduct thorough verification, granted him a loan of Rs 2 lakh, and deposited the amount into a bank account he had opened under the woman’s name, said the police.
The woman remained oblivious to this fraud for nearly a year until she received messages and calls demanding the loan’s monthly repayment instalment. When she raised the matter in the office, Sugumaran confessed to his wrongdoing and assured her he would promptly resolve the matter, said the police.

The woman approached the police after the accused failed to carry out the promise of repayment and stopped all communication with her.
