Within a month after a rowdy-sheeter and Hindutva activist was killed, another murder in Karnataka’s coastal region hit headlines as a pickup van driver was hacked to death in Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday.

Abdul Raheem was hacked to death while unloading sand near Kambodi Irakodi near Kolthamajalu, where he lived, according to sources.

A police officer said the killers arrived on a bike and attacked Raheem. A person who accompanied him was injured in the attack.

The district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarika Suraksha Sanhita. The prohibitory orders will be in force from 6 pm on May 27 till 6 pm on May 30 in the Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur, Kadaba, and Sullia taluks.

District in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao condemned the incident and said he had spoken to the DGP and the ADGP. “There is an organised network trying to disrupt peace in Dakshina Kannada district. This also looks like part of a plan. I have directed the district administration to take action. I request the public not to pay heed to any rumours,” he added.

The Bantwal rural police have registered a case of murder and are investigating.

On May 1, Suhas Shetty was murdered in Mangaluru and 11 people have been arrested in connection with it. He had five cases against him–four in Mangaluru city and one in Dakshina Kannada district. He was the prime accused in the murder of Mohammed Fazil, 23, in Surathkal on July 28, 2022.
