Nearly 10 days after registration for Yuva Nidhi opened, the scheme has received a total of 32,184 applications from graduates till date. Yuva Nidhi is the fifth guarantee promised by the ruling Congress government in Karnataka, under which students who have completed graduation and diploma courses in 2023 will get an unemployment allowance for a period of two years. With just over 32,000 registrations, only 6 per cent of eligible beneficiaries have applied for the scheme.
According to the data shared by the skill development, entrepreneurship, and livelihood department, Belagavi and Bengaluru Urban districts have topped the list. Nearly 3,900 applications have been submitted in Belagavi while 2,853 applications have been submitted in Bengaluru Urban.
The third-highest application count came from Bagalkot (1,943), followed by Vijayapura (1,741) and Raichur (1,714). Districts like Udupi (236), Kodagu (120), Chamarajanagar (237), and Ramanagara (329) recorded fewer registrations.
A senior official in the skill development, entrepreneurship, and livelihood department told Indian Express, “Bengaluru and Belagavi topped the list because of the concentration of colleges. Both these districts have more colleges which means more graduates.”
About 5.3 lakh youth who have graduated during the academic year 2022-2023 have been identified as eligible beneficiaries. However, those with employment and those pursuing higher education are not eligible. A total of Rs 250 crore has been allocated for the remaining financial year, while the scheme is expected to cost Rs 1,250 crore next year and Rs 2,500 crore the year after. The allowance will be credited to the beneficiaries on January 12 at a special event in Shivamogga, marking Swami Vivekananda Jayanti.
Under the scheme, unemployment assistance of Rs 3,000 per month will be given to degree holders and Rs 1,500 to diploma holders.
Candidates who remain unemployed after completion of 180 days of declaration of results are eligible for the allowance. The allowance will be given for a period of two years from the date of announcement of results or till the beneficiary becomes employed/self-employed, whichever is earlier.
