Two students have died of suspected food poisoning at a residential educational institution in Karnataka’s Mandya district after they ate meals supplied as part of Holi celebrations.
Namibanthye, 12, and Kirshen Lyang, 13—both students of Gokula Vidyasamsthe in T Kagepur village of Malavalli taluk—died on Sunday and Monday night, respectively.
Local businessman Pushpendra Kumar supplied the food to the Gokula Vidyasamsthe students on Sunday. As many as 120 people fell ill, including 40 students of the school, among them 24 students from the Northeast.
According to police sources, the food was prepared at a hotel in Malavalli.
“Health officials have visited the site and collected samples. We are awaiting the report and a case has been registered. Other students and individuals are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Mandya and Mysuru,” an officer said.
A police source said the Gokula Vidyasamsthe management had obtained permission to run a school but was illegally operating a residential institution. The police and education department have asked the management to provide necessary documents, the source added.
