The CBI Friday said it has brought back a rape accused from the UAE to India.
A case of rape was registered at the Mahadevapura police station in Bengaluru in 2020 against the accused, identified as Midhun V V Chandran.
The CBI said its Global Operations Centre coordinated with the Interpol NCB – Abu Dhabi, the Karnataka Police, the Indian Embassy in the UAE, and the Ministry of External Affairs to get the rape accused extradited.
A CBI source said Chandran was first geolocated in the UAE. Later, a red corner notice was issued against him by the Interpol general secretariat in January this year based on a request from the Karnataka Police.
According to the FIR registered in Mahadevapura police station, Chandran fell in love with a colleague and promised to marry her when he was working in a private firm in Bengaluru in 2016. Later, he reportedly developed a physical relationship with the victim. The woman also alleged that Chandran took a lot of money from her and later went back on his promise to marry her. Consequently, the victim filed a complaint against Chandran and another woman in 2020.
The police booked the accused under Sections 376 (rape), 417 (cheating), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. However, Chandran absconded soon after.
The CBI said, “Due to close coordination and follow-up with foreign law enforcement agencies via Interpol channels, as many as 26 criminals wanted by Indian law enforcement agencies have been returned from abroad in 2023.”
