Karnataka: Brother of accused in Praveen Nettaru murder case arrested for ‘threatening’ BJP worker

A local BJP worker from Bellare approached the police saying that he received a call from Safreed, who verbally abused and also threatened to kill him.

The Dakshina Kannada police in Karnataka have arrested the brother of one of the accused in the murder of BJP Yuva Morcha worker Praveen Nettaru after he allegedly threatened a BJP worker.

According to the police, the arrested has been identified as Safreed, younger brother of Shafique, who was arrested in the case.

Prashanth Rai, a local BJP worker from Bellare, where Nettaru also hailed from, approached the police saying that he received a threat call from Safreed, who verbally abused and also threatened to kill him and the police registered a case.

The police said that Safreed is an SDPI activist and also son of Ibrahim, who used to work in the chicken shop of Praveen Nettaru. On Saturday evening, tension prevailed in the Sullia police station after hundreds of Hindu activists gathered demanding to take action against Safreed.

Nettaru was hacked to death by two bike-borne attackers in Bellare village of the Dakshina Kannada district on July 26. The police arrested six persons before the government handed over the case to the NIA. Recently, the NIA had carried out searches in at least 33 locations of the state.
