A local court in Chitradurga on Monday sent Sri Jagadguru Murugharajendra Mutt head Shivamurthy Sharanaru to judicial custody till September 14.
Chitradurga police produced Shivamurthy in the court on Monday at the end of his three-day police custody. The police informed the court of Second Additional District and Sessions Judge B K Komala that no more need Shivamurthy’s custody.
The hearing on the bail application moved by Shivamurthy’s counsel has been listed for September 7 and the police have asked the public prosecutor to file objections, if any.
The Mysuru police lodged a complaint against Shivamurthy on August 26 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) pertaining to rape. This came after the girls told members of the state Child Welfare Committee that they were sexually assaulted between January 1, 2019, and June 6, 2022. The case was later transferred to Chitradurga district police. The police had arrested Shivamurthy on Thursday evening.
