A 32-year-old man in Karnataka’s Kolar district allegedly slit the throat of his wife’s boyfriend and drank his blood on June 19, even as the entire act was captured by an associate in a video that has since gone viral.

The police arrested Vijay, a trader from Mandyampet, for attempting to murder Maresh, a fellow villager, in his early 30s. They have launched a search for Vijay’s cousin John Babu, who allegedly filmed the incident.

Vijay’s motive stemmed from his intense anger over the growing proximity between Maresh and his wife, the police said. “The attack occurred near Siddepalli Cross in the Chintamani taluk on June 19 and was recorded by Vijay’s cousin. Maresh survived the assault as Vijay used a small knife that did not cause significant damage. Police investigations revealed that Maresh and Vijay’s wife had been constantly communicating via phone, fuelling Vijay’s rage,” said an officer.

Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Vijay and his family settled in Chintamani 30 years ago. They resided in Mandyampet and led an itinerant lifestyle — selling various goods, including edible oil, clothes, vegetables, and other essentials. Maresh owned a Tata Ace that he rented out for transportation services, and Vijay would often hire his vehicle.

Maresh reportedly developed a close companionship with Vijay’s wife, engaging in lengthy phone conversations that Vijay strongly disapproved of. Despite being warned of dire consequences multiple times, Maresh purportedly disregarded the warnings and continued his behaviour.

On June 19, Vijay contacted his cousin Babu, a B Com student, and asked him to arrange a rental trip with Maresh from Siddepalli Cross to a nearby farm. When Maresh arrived with his vehicle, Vijay and Babu took him on their bike under the pretext of showing him the tomatoes that needed to be transported. Instead of heading to the farm, they allegedly led him to a secluded location and committed the crime there before fleeing, the police said.

Maresh received timely medical assistance and survived the attack. Although Maresh refrained from filing a police complaint, the police registered a case after the video clip went viral on social media.
