The Supreme Court will hear on Tuesday a plea by the Karnataka Waqf Board challenging a High Court order allowing Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at the Idgah maidan in Bengaluru.
Waqf counsel and senior advocate Kapil Sibal sought an urgent hearing into the matter, informing a bench headed by Chief Justice of India U U Lalit that “unnecessary tensions will be created”; if the matter is not taken up immediately. The land, Sibal said, has been in use by Muslims for decades.
The Waqf plea came days after a division bench of the Karnataka HC allowed the state government to approve applications seeking use of the Idgah maidan in Chamarajpet locality to hold cultural and religious celebrations, including Ganesh Chaturthi, for a limited period from August 31.
The HC division bench order, issued last Friday, came just a day after a single-judge bench had said the land could be used only as a playground, for celebrating Independence and Republic Day, and as a prayer ground by Muslism twice a year on Eid.
