Bank heist in Karnataka’s Davanagere: Gang steals jewellery worth Rs 13 crore from SBI locker

A gang of thieves broke into a State Bank of India branch in Karnataka’s Davanagere district and made away with gold jewelry worth Rs 12.95 crore, said the police.

The theft took place in Nyamathi town, 325 km away from Bengaluru. The incident came to light on Monday morning when the bank employees opened the premises. The police said the jewellery kept in lockers was stolen, and they suspect it might have been done on the night of either October 25 or 26, as the bank was closed those days.

A police officer reported that the thieves entered the bank through a window on the left side. “They used gas cutters to break into three locker doors but were only able to successfully open one. The thieves also removed the CCTV cameras and the digital video recorder. The other two lockers contained Rs 30 lakh in cash and some jewellery. We suspect that either the gas ran out or they ran out of time,” the officer said.
