The video footage recorded by the villagers shows the bull charging towards the crowd when people lifted Renukacharya on their shoulder as part of welcoming the leader. The BJP MLA escaped with minor injuries but few people in the crowd sustained injuries.

On Saturday, Renukacharya tweeted saying he is fine.

‘Hori Habba’ is similar to ‘Jallikattu’ practiced in Tamil Nadu. The bull taming contest is popular in Shivamogga, Devangere, Haveri and Uttara Kannada districts in North Karnataka during the Deepavali festival.

The rural sport is a gala event in which hundreds of trained and decorated draught cattle and bulls are made to run through the huge crowd. Those who tame the bull or snatch the garland or any other things tied around the bull’s neck get prizes.
