Minority status, which was restored by an amendment to the AMU Act in 1981, was challenged before Allahabad HC, which struck down the changes in January 2006.
Suchana Seth, who is accused of killing her son, had filed a domestic violence case on August 8, 2022, against her husband Venkataraman P R, a data scientist with a Ph D in Physics, who is a top executive with a financial services firm. Her husband, however, had denied the allegations in court.
The domestic violence case is reported to have been filed in the course of divorce proceedings and a custody battle for their son. A family court in Bengaluru had issued a restraining order against the husband on August 18, 2022. The court had initially barred Venkataraman from entering the residence of Suchana and from communicating either by phone or any other media with her son.
The case is still underway and at the last hearing on December 12, 2023, the father of the child had reported the payment of Rs 20,000 as maintenance to the mother and the court had adjourned the matter to January 29, 2024.
In her plea accusing her husband of domestic violence, Suchana had sought a maintenance of Rs 2.5 lakh per month and indicated that her husband Venkataraman P R earned Rs 9 lakh per month.
The couple met when they were research fellows at the Raman Research Institute between 2008 and 2011. A source told The Indian Express that Seth dropped out in 2010. Their son was born on August 14, 2019.
Seth alleged in the domestic violence case that she had been living separately since March 2021 due to the fear of violence at home. She alleged that her husband had not cared for her during child birth and subsequently. She also provided the court with copies of WhatsApp messages, pictures and medical records to substantiate her allegations of domestic violence.
“On perusal of the materials and also photos furnished by the petitioner, it prima facie discloses there is domestic violence against the petitioner and her child by the respondent. At this stage, in the interest of justice and also to avoid multiplicity of proceedings, it is necessary to restrain the respondent from entering the residence of petitioner and her son,” a family court ruled in Bengaluru in August 2022.
On September 21, 2023 the court ordered the father of the child to “pay monthly interim maintenance of Rs 20,000/- per month to the petitioner from the date of this order, till disposal of the petition”. Venkatraman is reported to have paid Rs 60,000 from September to November to his estranged wife as maintenance.
Seth (39) is the CEO of an AI startup in Bengaluru, The Mindful AI Lab, a technical consultancy. Her husband Venkatraman is an engineer who studied at Calicut University. He obtained a doctorate in physics from the Raman Research Institute before venturing into data science, as per his online profile.
