IISc student found dead in hostel room; second case on campus in 15 days

A 22-year-old MTech student at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room on Thursday, the police said.

The student, Gopal, was from West Bengal. According to a senior police officer, the incident is suspected to have occurred Wednesday night and came to light on Thursday morning after the police were alerted.

The police said they recovered a note from the scene. Preliminary investigation indicates the student may have been facing relationship-related issues. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.

The IISc, in a statement, expressed grief over the student’s death on August 20 and conveyed its condolences to his family and friends. “We are committed to ensuring that the IISc campus is a safe and inclusive space for everyone,” the institute said.
