A 65-year-old man was murdered and his wife critically injured at their residence in Adugodi on Tuesday. The couple, bank official Uday Raj Singh and wife Susheela, were trying to sell antique jewellery worth over Rs 10 crore, and the culprits came into their house posing as buyers.

Three of the accused were promptly nabbed by police personnel who were deployed in a private school nearby to provide security during examinations. The police officials rushed to the spot after they heard screams coming from near the couple’s house.

Police suspect a seven-member gang gained entry to the residence, located on 10th Cross in Lakksandra, around 3.15 pm posing as customers. The gang attacked the couple while trying to snatch the jewellery, police said.

The culprits slit the throats of the couple, grabbed the jewellery and tried to flee the building, additional commissioner of police for law and order Kamal Pant said.

People nearby, who had heard screams and saw the couple’s dogs barking, suspected something was wrong and informed policemen on duty at Mary Immaculate School. Police officials rushed to the house and surrounded it. They spotted some persons jumping over the compound wall and nabbed three of them.

“Three persons are in police custody. We will reveal their names and other details after the arrest of the absconding persons,” Kamal Pant said.

The attackers fled the scene thinking both the husband and wife were dead. Susheela, who was rushed to a nearby hospital, is out of danger, and provided details about the attack, police said.
