5 of a family killed in accident on Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway

According to Ramanagara police, the car was likely overspeeding when one of its tyres suffered a blowout.

A family of five, including three children, was killed in a car accident on the newly inaugurated Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway on Saturday. The accident occurred near Lambani Tanda in Channapatna taluk of Ramanagara district.

The deceased have been identified as Ravi Pujar (45), who was driving the car, his wife Lakshmi Pujar (40), and their three children — Inchara Pujar (15), Shantala Pujar (10) and Siri Pujar (3). Ravi was an employee of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and the family resided in Kengeri.

According to Ramanagara police, the car was probably speeding when one of its tyres burst and as a result, Ravi Pujar lost control of the car. The vehicle swung across the expressway and collided head-on with an SUV travelling from Mysuru towards Bengaluru. The impact of the collision was so massive that the front portion of the car was completely damaged. Passersby rushed to the rescue of the family and removed them from the mangled remains of the car.

Ravi died on the spot. The remaining family members were taken to a nearby private hospital. Inchara and Siri passed away on the way to the hospital, while Lakshmi and Shantala were admitted to NIMHANS, Bengaluru, where they succumbed to their injuries later in the day.

Concerns have been raised about the increasing number of accidents on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, particularly related to speeding. Since the expressway provides a free right of way, unlike the old highway, many drivers have met with accidents due to overspeeding.
