Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya said the second train set is expected to be delivered by the end of January or first week of February, and the third in April this year. (Express File Photo)Bengaluru Metro’s first driverless train will be ready to be dispatched on January 6, Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya said on Thursday.
The train sets being manufactured by Titagarh Rail System Ltd (TRSL) for the yet-to-be operational 18-km Yellow Line have missed multiple deadlines.
The commissioning of the Yellow Line that stretches from RV Road and Bommasandra got delayed primarily due to the unavailability of the rolling stock.
Further, the second train set is expected to be delivered by the end of January or first week of February, and the third in April this year, he said.
“Over the last few months, I have been continuously following up with the train manufacturers — Titagarh Rail Systems — to expedite production. Many roadblocks, including VISAs to engineers, were addressed. Titagarh even put up a dedicated line for manufacturing trains for BMRCL. We now have the first train ready to be dispatched to Bengaluru on January 6th,” Surya updated on X.
With Kolkata-based TRSL set to deliver its first six-coach train set on January 6 for the Yellow Line and second train in February, BMRCL plans to commence operations with three trains at a frequency of every 30 minutes.
“Titagarh has committed to deliver the second train by the end of January or first week of February and the third in April. Thereafter they will deliver 1 train per month and increase to 2 trains per month by September. I have also asked BMRCL to work parallel to get all CMRS approvals in place, to prevent further delays on that count. I have requested Hon. MoHUA Minister to visit the manufacturing plant on 6th January, flag off the trains to Bengaluru and also inspect the plant to help further expedite things,” the MP stated.
China’s CRRC Corporation Ltd was awarded a contract to supply 216 new coaches for Bengaluru Metro’s 73.95-km Phase 2 project’s Purple Line (Line-1), Green Line (Line-2) and Yellow Line (Line-3). It then partnered with TRSL to make trainsets in India to comply with local manufacturing norms.
Meanwhile, the prototype of distance-to-go (DTG) train for Bengaluru Metro’s Purple Line from China will be delivered to Bengaluru’s Peenya depot by January 16.
The first prototype train from CRRC reached Bengaluru on February 14, last year. The operations for Yellow Line was expected to start by 2021, but challenges such as Covid-19, procurement delays, foreign direct investment (FDI) norms, and trade restrictions with China delayed the production and delivery of the trainsets.
