The Karnataka police have arrested two persons for allegedly killing a 25-year-old Dalit youth over his alleged relationship with a woman of another community. Tension prevailed in Wadi town of Kalaburgi district after several right-wing outfits reportedly demanded stern action.

Those arrested are Shahabuddin, the woman’s brother, and Nawaz, both aged 19 years. The deceased has been identified as Vijaya Kamble, who worked as a cook in the Railways Department. The incident took place on Wednesday night when Kamble was returning home from work.

Around 9.20 pm, Kamble was waylaid near a railway bridge and was attacked with weapons, stones and killed on the spot. According to police sources, Kamble was in love with a woman belonging to a different religion and wanted to marry her. But the woman’s family opposed their relationship.

Shahabuddin had allegedly threatened Kamble to stay away from his sister in the past as well. The Wadi police, who have registered a murder case against the duo, said the accused were currently in police custody and further investigation was underway.
