The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an additional legal advisor posted with the Ministry of Law and Justice who is also the in-charge of the Branch Secretariat, Central Government, and an advocate based in Bengaluru for allegedly taking bribes worth Rs 2.5 lakh from five lawyers, officials said.

The arrested are T K Malik, Additional Legal Advisor and In-charge of Branch Secretariat, Bengaluru, and Vani G K, the advocate. The two were later remanded in judicial custody, the investigators said on Thursday.

The CBI has registered a case against Malik, Vani and unknown public servants and private people on the allegations that the officials had been taking bribes from advocates for facilitating their appointments or registration as notaries for different states, including Karnataka.

The CBI received a tip-off from one of its sources that all the accused were in contact with a female advocate who worked as a negotiator with the lawyers in fixing the deal for the appointments where each lawyer had to pay a bribe of Rs 50,000. The accused demanded a share of the bribe from the advocate that she received in the illegal deal, officials said.

“A source information has been received that Malik is…obtaining bribes from advocates for facilitating their appointment as notary,” the FIR stated.

“Source information also revealed that Malik informed Vani that he had paid some amounts in Delhi for the selection of five advocates as notary and now she should give some payments to him. He demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 per advocate…” the FIR stated.
