Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar interacted with resident welfare associations’ representatives and civic society members as part of the Brand Bengaluru campaign on Saturday. He said the campaign had received 30,000 suggestions from residents.
“The government should often listen to the problems of citizens. Ward meetings should be held regularly and opinions of citizens should be sought. As part of Brand Bengaluru, more than 30,000 suggestions have been received from the public regarding the city’s development. We will also seek opinions of school and college students on Brand Bengaluru,” said Shivakumar, who also holds the Bengaluru development portfolio.
“Everybody’s suggestions will be taken into consideration. We are collecting information from the citizens on traffic management, infrastructure and how to contain flooding, among other things,” he added.
The government launched an online portal to invite suggestions on the city’s development on June 21.
The minister said that cameras would be installed to keep a check on the illegal dumping of waste. “I have instructed officials to trace vehicles that are found dumping waste in public places. Two or three important decisions will be taken in this month regarding the cleanliness of the city. I have already had a meeting with the civic body on the issue of illegal garbage disposal on roads,” he said.
With complaints of hawkers encroaching on footpaths mounting with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, Shivakumar said the government would frame a policy beneficial for pedestrians.
He also said the government had decided to frame a system in which property documents would be delivered to residents at their doorstep. “Citizens of Bengaluru will no longer need to wade through government offices for their property records. The issue of property tax was discussed in today’s meeting and citizens highlighted that those who pay tax face problems and those who do not are protected. If we deliver respective property documents to the doorstep, we will get a clear picture of who owns how much property. There is no distinction between big and small when it comes to property tax. In this matter, we will find out those who have not paid the tax. Bengaluru cannot develop if we do not increase our resources,” he told reporters after the meeting.
Shivakumar said that it was important to mobilise resources for the massive projects that the government would undertake.
The vision for the Brand Bengaluru campaign includes advanced urban planning, innovative transportation systems and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure to enhance safety, convenience and sustainability. The city aims to optimise commute times, reduce congestion and improve mobility through efficient transportation and smart traffic management.
