Bengaluru vacant plot cleanup: 80% owners yet to comply, notices soon
Only 20% of Bengaluru vacant plot owners have complied with the cleanup deadline. Civic bodies will issue notices and recover cleaning costs through property tax.

With the deadline to clean up vacant sites within the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) limits ending on Saturday, Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said only 20 per cent of plot owners have complied, and the rest would be served notices.
In a review meeting held virtually on Monday, Gowda said, “Cleaning of vacant plots cannot be left to chance… Wherever civic bodies have to undertake the (cleaning) work, the cost should subsequently be recovered through property tax.”
Revenue officials have been directed to identify and prepare a list of vacant plots that require cleaning. Notices should then be served on the owners by marshals and junior health inspectors, following which the respective civic bodies should undertake the cleaning wherever necessary.
The minister directed all five GBA corporations to begin the cleaning drive from Thursday, with the exercise to be scaled up and implemented more intensively from the following Monday. The civic bodies have been asked to make all necessary arrangements, including JCBs, tippers, tractors and adequate manpower, to undertake the cleaning drive across the city. Steps should also be taken to identify agencies that can be engaged for the work, he said.
Gowda also asked officials to make before-and-after video documentation by geo-tagging the location for every vacant plot cleaned by the civic authorities.
According to Gowda, the collected waste and debris must be disposed of only at designated locations. The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited has been directed to ensure that the process – from identification and cleaning to waste collection and disposal – is captured on the ‘Clear It’ software.
Under the ‘Freedom from Waste’ campaign, the GBA initially set a deadline of August 15 to clean vacant plots in Bengaluru. The deadline was later extended till August 22.
