Bengaluru NIA court sentences Bangladeshi national to 7-year imprisonment in terror case

A National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court in Bengaluru on Monday sentenced one Bangladeshi national to seven years of rigorous imprisonment in a series of cases related to alleged terror activities of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh-India (JMB-India).
Jahidul Islam alias Kausar was also fined Rs 57,000 for dacoity, conspiracy, raising funds, and procuring ammunition. With his conviction, 11 people have been found guilty in these cases.
The Bengaluru city police registered the initial case in June 2019 based on information generated by the NIA during the agency’s Kolkata branch office’s investigation of the Burdwan Blast case. Subsequently, the agency registered the case and initiated a probe into the matter.
As per NIA investigations, Jahidul Islam, the JMB ‘amir’ of India, along with absconding JMB head Salauddin Salehin, illegally crossed over into India in 2014 after escaping the custody of Bangladesh police in connection with the 2005 serial blasts in Bangladesh. During the hiding, he and his associates were allegedly involved in the October 2014 Burdwan blast case.
After the blast, according to the NIA, Jahidul and his aides fled to Bengaluru, where he allegedly radicalised and recruited gullible Muslim youth from West Bengal and Assam to further the anti-India activities of the JMB. The accused and his associates also committed the blast in Bodhgaya in January 2018, as per the NIA.
NIA investigations further revealed that the accused and his associates had also conspired to raise funds through dacoity for furthering the activities of JMB. In 2018, they committed four dacoities in Bengaluru as part of this agenda and used the looted money for procuring ammunition and arranging hideouts and training to carry out terrorist activities, according to the NIA.
