Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara Monday said the government was expecting 7-8 lakh revellers to hit the streets of Bengaluru on New Year’s Eve.

After holding a meeting with top police officers at the Bengaluru police commissioner’s office, Parameshwara said traffic restrictions will be imposed in the central business district on New Year’s Eve like previous years.

“I have gathered information from police officials… measures have been taken to make Christmas and New Year celebrations safe. Emphasis has been placed on women’s safety. We have also decided to have more app-based cab and Namma Metro services on December 31,” he added.

The minister also informed that stern action will be taken against drunk driving and those engaging in anti-social activities.

Last week, the Bengaluru traffic police started a special drive against drunk driving. A total of 60,903 vehicles have been checked and 769 cases registered to cancel driving licences. More than 200 drivers have been booked for rash driving and a fine of Rs 2.41 lakh collected.

A police officer said the drive would continue till the first week of the new year.
