Former Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy took to Twitter and sought to know who would benefit from the 10-lane Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. The Janata Dal (Secular) leader claimed that the expressway will be of no use to the residents of Ramanagara and Mandya districts located between Bengaluru and Mysuru.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi visited poll-bound Karnataka and inaugurated the expressway built at a cost of over Rs 8,000 crore to reduce the travel time between the two cities in southern Karnataka.

“This is an important issue. Who will benefit from the 10-lane expressway between Bengaluru and Mysuru? It is a highway for whom to mint money? Is there benefit worth a paisa to people living along the highway in Ramanagara and Mandya districts? No,” Kumaraswamy tweeted.

He went on to say that the road will only help those commuting from Bengaluru to Mysuru. “More than 2,600 businesses such as small, medium hotels, micro and small industries, petrol pumps and others have shut due to the new expressway. More than 6,000 people have lost their livelihoods,” he said.

“The old highway was the lifeline of Ramanagara and Mandya districts and the lakhs of people in them. The new highway is a route for money for some people. The express highway has claimed the livelihoods of people. They have been dealt a major blow to their personal lives and economic power,” he added.

The JD(S) leader also said there was anger among the people. He questioned why two-wheelers were not allowed to ply on the expressway. “At least two lanes of the expressway could have been reserved for two-wheelers? Is this a favour? No, it is the right of the people,” Kumaraswamy tweeted. “Who is responsible for the livelihoods lost? What is the alternative offered to them?” he asked.
