Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) said Thursday it recorded more than 27,000 offences by passengers between September 2024 and March this year, and urged travellers to follow regulations and be responsible Metro users.

In a press statement, BMRCL said 11,922 cases pertained to playing loud music on moving trains — which it banned in 2023. The Corporation also said that 14,162 passengers were flagged for not offering the priority seats meant for persons with disabilities (PwD), senior citizens, pregnant women, and those traveling with infants.

It said 554 cases of consumption of eatables while traveling were noticed, despite guidelines discouraging this practice on trains. Additionally, 474 incidents involved commuters carrying oversized luggage.

“Although no penalties were imposed for these actions, the Security Squad issued stern warnings aimed to discourage such behaviour and reinforce the importance of adhering to Namma Metro guidelines for a harmonious commute,” BMRCL said in the statement.

However, a BMRCL spokesperson said a fine of Rs 8.15 lakh was imposed on passengers from August 2012 to March 2025 for failing to comply with Namma Metro etiquette.

As BMRCL released the statement regarding the offences committed by passengers, several commuters criticised the Corporation over delayed projects, among other things,

“When you say oversized luggage what do you mean by that . Since you are planning to transport passengers to airport in the future how do you plan to accomodate someone who is traveling abroad with a full size check in bags + 1 backpack?” Arun Vishwanath posted on X.

“For your information, you are wasting power supply on an ATM machine at the A exit of the Cubbon Park metro station that has never for once been able to dispense any cash for over two months. Firstly please see where you can save on costs before lecturing the public,” Ashish Krupakar said.

Another Bengaluru resident, Prajwal Kedlaya, said, “Would have appreciated this honesty in completion of super delayed projects and fair fare fixations and some accountability.”

“How can we fine you for not meeting deadlines continuously? When is Yellow line opening?” asked Sumanth.
