Bengaluru News Highlights: Several PFI, SDPI taken into preventive custody in Karnataka; precautionary measure, says Home Minister

Bengaluru News Updates: According to initial reports, 8-9 PFI and SDPI leaders in Mangaluru, six in Kolar, seven in Bagalkot, two in Bidar and one in Vijayapura are under preventive custody.

Karnataka Bengaluru News Highlights: Local leaders of PFI and SDPI were taken into preventive custody in different parts of Karnataka Tuesday. According to initial reports, 8-9 leaders in Mangaluru, six in Kolar, seven in Bagalkot, two in Bidar and one in Vijayapura are under preventive custody. Home Minister Araga Jnanendra described it as a precautionary measure and said they had “created a tense situation by protesting in the streets during the recent raids by NIA on their leaders.”

Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu Monday inaugurated the Mysuru Dasara, the ten-day festival which attracts crowds across the globe, and became the first head of the state to do so. Mysuru Dasara, which has more than 400 years of history, is celebrated to mark the local deity Goddess Chamundeshwari’s victory over Mahishasura. Dasara is celebrated for nine days and on the tenth day of Vijaya Dashami, a grand procession is held.

Meanwhile, six Air Force officers have been charged with murder in connection with the death of a former Air Force Technical College (AFTC) trainee. Police in Bengaluru, where the AFTC is based, said no arrests have been made so far and that they are waiting for the post-mortem report.

Kempegowda International Airport breaks its own record of shipping perishable items

Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR airport) Tuesday reported that it recorded 52,366 Metric Tonnes (MT) of perishable shipments in FY 2021-22, compared to the previous year’s 48,130 MT. 

“41% of South India’s air-cargo perishable tonnage is currently handled by BLR Airport making it the leading airport for perishables in India. Fruits and vegetables along with the export of poultry and flowers have been major segments driving this growth. 36,493 MT of poultry and 1,952 MT of flowers were exported from BLR Airport in FY '22.  Doha emerged as the leading destination followed by Singapore, London, and Male. A total of 33 cargo freighter airlines transported perishable shipments from BLR Airport to 85 international destinations in FY '22,” statement from the airport read.

CMS Jain University hosts two-day international conference on ethics in journalism 

Bengaluru-based Jain University- Centre for Management Studies is hosting a two day international conference on ‘Ethics in Research and Principles of Ethical Journalism and its Impact on Society’. The first day of the conference was conducted today with a keynote address by TR Gopalakrishnan, consulting editor, Citizen Matters who advised students on the importance of ‘revealing the truth’ in journalism and the need to keep a tab with the morning newspapers. 


The conference  also encouraged the students, scholars, and prospective authors to present their research papers and case studies with the aim of identifying challenges of research ethics, understanding the impact of ethics, elaborating the needs and demands of ethical journalism, and analyzing ethical and legal inadequacies.

Dr. Bhargavi D. Hemmige, chairperson, conference organising committee and HoD, Dept of Journalism and Mass Communication, while delivering the concept theme emphasized, the need for ethical journalism in the present day’s media ownership context.

Karnataka: Science researcher objects to Hubballi-Ankola railway line

A day before a public consultation meeting on the Hubballi-Ankola railway is set to be held, a basic science researcher based out of Uttara Kannada district, Ravi Hegde, has submitted a list of objections against the railway project to the office of the deputy commissioner of the district.

The Union environment ministry on June 3 this year had set up a seven-member committee to examine the project. The team is on a visit to the district. The project requires the conversion of 594.64 hectare of forest land.

Hegde said that the proposed Hubballi-Ankola railway track project is not mandatory for human survival but the tropical rainforest habitat is essential for the survival of the rarest of the rare population of endemic and endangered flora and fauna of the Western Ghats.

Karnataka: Govt should reveal reasons for raiding PFI leaders, says JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy

Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy Tuesday asked the government to reveal the reasons for the raids on Popular Front of India (PFI) leaders.

“If the (state) government fails to do so, we will have to believe that these raids are being conducted to divert attention from the allegations of corruption against the government,” the former chief minister said.

“The government should reveal the details of the discoveries made and other documents to the people of the state. If they fail to reveal the truth behind the raids, people will suspect that these raids are being made to divert attention from the ‘PayCM’ campaign of the Congress,” he said. Read More

Karnataka: Headmaster heckled for asking students to write essay on Prophet Muhammed

The headmaster of a government school in Karnataka’s Gadag district was allegedly heckled by activists of Sri Rama Sene, a Right-wing outfit, Tuesday after he asked the students to write an essay on Prophet Muhammed. The activists also accused the headmaster of facilitating religious conversion of the students.

The incident took place in the Government High School in Nagavi village. The activists barged into the school and heckled headmaster Abdul Munafar Bijapur, leaving the rest of the people in the school of 172 students “in a state of shock”. Kiran Parashar reports.

Karnataka BJP calls former CM and Congress leader Siddaramaiah 'Supreme Corrupt'

Karnataka BJP took it to Twitter to call former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah 'Supreme Corrupt' and added that he 'closed the investigation agency to hide the corruption cases against him.'

The state BJP Chief Nalin Kumar Kateel said, "He is the inspiration for those who commit murder, communal riots and anti-national acts. Siddaramaiah is the reason for the growth of PFI and SDPI. Anti-national organizations grew during his tenure. Our government has now taken a firm decision."

Kateel further alleged that Congress has ties with the drug mafia and sand mafia. "Congress has looted the state. Another name for corruption is Congress", he said.

Karnataka Cong chief pleads with Rahul Gandhi to return as party president

Karnataka Congress president D K Shivakumar on Tuesday appealed to Rahul Gandhi to take over as the party's national president in this "hour of crisis" and to "save" it.

He said only the Gandhi family (Indira, Rajiv Gandhi) can keep the country and the party united and that Rahul Gandhi becoming the Congress president once again was the demand of partymen across India.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has received the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) Champion Award 2022 under the category of “Technology & Product Innovation for Large Companies”.

The Hon’ble Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh today presented the award to Mr L Ramakrishnan, Chief Scientist of BEL’s Central Research Laboratory (CRL)-Bangalore and Dr Ramesh Chaveli, Principal Scientist (CRL-Bangalore) at the awards ceremony organised in New Delhi.

Murugha mutt pontiff’s judicial custody extended till October 10

A local court in Karnataka’s Chitradurga on Tuesday extended for 14 days the judicial custody of Shivamurthy Sharanaru, the Murugha mutt pontiff arrestedfor the alleged sexual assault of two minor students.

The Chitradurga court extended the pontiff’s judicial custody till October 10. The judicial custody of the warden, another accused in the case, was also extended till October 10.

Meanwhile, sources close to the mutt said that they are scheduled to hold a meeting on September 29 to decide whether Sharanaru must step down from the pontiff position or continue. According to an employee of the mutt, the employees are upset that the incident has affected the image of the 400-year-old mutt and impacted its day-to-day operations. Read More

Karnataka PFI raids: Over 80 PFI and SDPI workers taken into preventive custody

The Karnataka Police Tuesday detained more than 80 members of the Popular Front of India (PFI) and Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) during an early morning operation as a preventive measure, said officials.

Officials said these activists of PFI and SDPI were nabbed from different parts of the state, such as Mangaluru, Bagalkot, Bidar, Raichur, Gadag and other cities, over inputs of possible disturbance to public order. Read More.

Know Your City: Mysore Lancers Haifa Memorial – a historical landmark in Bengaluru with an Israel connection

Udaya Raghunatha Birje, great grandson of soldier Raghunatha Rao Birje who served in the Mysore Lancers during the First World War, recalled how his great grandmother used to describe the march of the Mysore Lancers through what is now the RT Main Road in Bengaluru. “My great grandmother used to tell me that the entire area used to shake under the hooves of the horses belonging to Mysore Lancers,” said Birje.

The Mysore Lancers Haifa Memorial – an iconic landmark representing the valour and bravery of the Mysore Lancers in the First World War – is an attraction in the neighbourhood. Located at the juncture of today’s RT Nagar and JC Nagar Main Road, the memorial is around 103 years old and was commissioned by the then Maharaja of Mysore Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. The memorial is engraved with a Roll of Honour mentioning the names of Mysore Lancers martyrs in the First World War.

Rift over Ganesh temple construction ends in double murder in Karnataka’s Tumakuru; two held

A rift over the construction of a Ganesh temple ended in a double murder in Karnataka's Tumakuru district Thursday night, the police said, adding that two people have been arrested in connection with the crime.

Officers identified the deceased as Shilpa, 38, and her relative Ramanjinappa, 45, residents of Midigeshi village in Tumakuru. Another person, Mallikarjunaiah, has sustained serious injuries in the attack and is undergoing treatment at a government hospital, the police stated. His condition is said to be critical.

Tumakuru SP Rahul Kumar Shahapurwad, who visited the village, said, “The incident took place over a land dispute and we have already arrested two people. A probe is underway and the law-and-order situation is under control.” While the prime accused Sridhar Gupta was arrested on Friday, one more person was held on Saturday. Two others are on the run, officers said.
