A BBMP civil works contractor cum film distributor committed suicide at his office in Bangalore on Monday over alleged non-payment of pending bills by the Bruhath Bangalore Mahanagara Palike. The contractor Ravi Kumar, 32, a resident of Nagarabhavi in the Jnanabharathi police station limits in West Bangalore was also the vice-president of the BBMP Contractors Association.
Police said that Kumar was found dead at his office around 2.30 pm on Monday. Police said that the reason behind the death was yet to be ascertained. Financial issues are suspected, police said.
Meanwhile, R Ambikapati, president of the BBMP Contractors Association alleged that delay in payments to contractors led to the unnatural death. Around Rs 1.5 crore was pending in dues to Kumar from the BBMP, the contractors association chief has alleged. Ambikapati also alleged that over Rs 2,100 crore in dues were yet to be paid to contractors across the city. “We have been facing this problem of non-payment since 2013. We hope our money will be paid now that the BBMP is under an administrator,” Ambikapati said.
