Bangalore pub brawl: BJP protests in State Assembly over failure to arrest Congress MLA

BJP MLAs protested in the well of the house and the legislature was adjourned for the day.

The Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs staged a dharna in the Karnataka State Assembly over the failure of Bangalore police in arresting Congress MLA Vijay Kashappanavar who attacked two constables at a pub.

The BJP had on Thursday raised the issue of Congress MLA Vijay Kashappanavar’s assault on two policemen trying to enforce a night life
deadline at the posh Skyye Bar in central Bangalore on Tuesday night. The Congress government while stating that the issue was a minor one and that police had been given a free hand in the matter had indicated that it would reply at length.

When the house convened here on Friday, the BJP demanded a reply from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on the issue and the failure of the police to arrest the Congress legislator who has been reported as absconding.

With Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stalling on a reply in the matter, the BJP protested in the well of the house and the legislature was adjourned
for the day.

Speaking to the media, leader of the opposition BJP Jagadish Shettar said that the BJP had co-operated in the conduct of the legislature proceedings on Thursday on account of the assurance by the government that it would provide a reply in the matter.

“The government did not give a reply yesterday and when a reply was sought today they tried to stall the reply,” Shettar said.

The BJP party had stated that the behaviour of the first-time Congress legislator could hurt the reputation of all legislators. The BJP also accused chief minister Siddaramaiah of treating the matter too lightly.

Former BJP home minister R Ashok said that the failure of the police to arrest the MLA involved in the assault of two constables was likely to demoralize the police force.

The Cubbon Park police in Bangalore had on Wednesday filed an FIR against the Congress legislator from the Hungund constituency in North Karnataka for assaulting two police constables at the upmarket Skyye Bar and Pub located at UB City in central Bangalore.

The police registered a case against Kashappanavar and a rowdy sheeter Somashekar Gowda based on a complaint by police constables Prashanth Nayak and Kiran Kumar, who are attached to the station.

The constables Nayak and Kumar were on night duty on Tuesday night when they learnt that the Skyye Bar was open beyond closing hours.

The policemen rushed to the bar around 1 am and started recording the activity at the bar on a camera. Some of the patrons at the bar objected to the recording and argued with the policemen when it was brought to their attention that the bar was open beyond the prescribed time limit.

Congress MLA Kashappanavar and the rowdy sheeter Somashekar Gowda allegedly intervened in the incident and claimed that the party was being hosted by the MLA to celebrate his birthday. An argument ensued and the policemen were assaulted by the MLA and his associate.
