Days after Congress legislator B R Patil resigned as political advisor to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the Aland MLA was appointed deputy chairman of the Karnataka State Policy and Planning Commission.

A notification to the effect was issued by the Department of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Monday. The post of deputy chairman will hold a Cabinet rank.

Patil, a four-time MLA, was appointed political advisor to the chief minister in December 2023. He was among the senior legislators who were said to be unhappy over being overlooked when Siddaramaiah picked his Cabinet.

He had resigned as political advisor to the chief minister at the end of January this year saying that he was “resigning due to some problems”. He had refused to divulge the details of his resignation, maintaining that he had explained them in the resignation letter sent to the CM.

Patil, considered a Siddaramaiah loyalist, was elected as MLA from three different parties – Janata Dal, Janata Dal (Secular), and Karnataka Janata Paksha – before he joined the Congress ahead of the 2018 polls. He lost the 2018 elections by around 700 votes before winning on a Congress ticket in 2023.

In July 2023, a couple of months after the Congress formed the government in May of that year, a letter by Patil generated controversy over ‘unfair’ treatment meted out by some ministers in the Siddaramaiah Cabinet to legislators of the ruling party. The move to appoint him as political advisor in December 2023 was seen as a tactic to curb the discontent brewing among senior legislators in the party.
