Three engineering students were killed on the spot, and another sustained minor injuries after their Audi hit a tree on Kolar-Bangarpet road near Karnataka’s Kolar district in the early hours of Saturday.

All four, between ages 20 to 22 years, were students at Bengaluru’s Reva University.

The deceased have been identified as Harshavardhan from Hassan, Basavana Gowda from Ballari and Prajwal from Kolar’s Bangarpet. Sai Gagan, who managed to escape with minor injuries, was sitting in the backseat of the car.

The incident took place around 2.30 am when the four of them were traveling from Kolar to Bengaluru, the police said.

Based on the investigation, the police attributed speed and rash driving as major reasons for the accident. Prajwal, who was driving the Audi, attempted to overtake a truck when the car lost control and rammed into a tree by the road. The force of the crash left the car mangled with the bodies being thrown 10 to 15 feet away from the vehicle, as per the police.

Sai Gagan told the police that the four of them were together to prepare for his sister’s wedding scheduled for August 11. In order to distribute wedding invitations in Bengaluru, Prajwal had borrowed the luxury car from a friend.

The bodies of three deceased were later taken to the mortuary of RL Jalappa hospital in Kolar.
